iPhone HD/4G versus the Almighty HTC Evo 4G!

Just when you thought it was over… Here is another ‘Clash of the Titans’ in the making!

There are quite a few things that differentiate the Evo 4G from the iPhone ’4G’. I want to call it the ‘HD’ iPhone but for the sake of ‘model naming succession’, I feel compelled to use the 4G moniker instead.

But there are a few differences/factors between the two phones:

Camera and multi-media consumption = Evo 4G, with its 4.3″ TFT LCD screen has the making of a mobile cinema at your finger tips as opposed to the iPhone ’4G’ rumored smaller screen (smaller than the 3GS even?).

Carriers:

In this case, AT&T versus Sprint. According to a recent Changewave study, the iPhone 4G’s AT&T networkhas shown a 4.5 percent call drop rate in the past 3 months, making it the worst of all 4 carriers. Just to put this figure into persepective, you can compare AT&T’s 4.5 percent to Verizon’s 1.5 percent, clearly a 3 times bigger call drop rate. I currently use AT&T myself and I can honestly tell you, I prefer the 3G data speed’s consistency over any AT&T 3G coverage hands down.

4G network:

The HTC Evo 4G is the first 4G phone to arrive in the US and will probably be the only one this year. Just for clarification, the iPhone 4G is not 4G capable; but instead, will more than likely inherit its name by being the successor to the 3GS. Rumors however point out that the iPhone 5G (2011 iPhone) will be 4G capable and probably using LTE. Hence why maybe they should call this year’s model the iPhone 3GS-2 and save 4G for 2011.

I will be getting HTC Evo 4G unless something just absolutely stunning comes out before then. My quest for ‘a higher tech’ will lead me away from AT&T and to Sprint. Which I already have an account with the Sprint OverDrive. Which is another story, but it has proven ‘battle’ worthy for my road warrior-ness.

Symbian 3^ delays, eager beavers let down, shareholders meh…

Symbian 3^ Delays

Symbian 3^ looks to be currently off track. According to a report from Reuters, the delay is expected to be until ’sometime in third quarter’… It was initially supposed to be in 2Q, but that schedule appears to have been not met.

Shareholders response? Meh! Shares dropped by as much as 12% on this news…

I have to admit, I am curious to see what Symbian 3^ is all about and how much of an improvement it will be over v5th edition, but it looks like we will all have to wait even longer to see.

So all you Symbian fans, get in line with the HTC Hero (GSM) fans and swap stories and lore about your favorite brand/os while you wait for all this to hash out!

We HTC Hero (GSM) owners must be gluttons for punishment! We are always told that an ‘update is just around the corner!’ time and again and yet we always have a false sense of hope!

From Phandroid:

“HTC Hero owners in Europe will have to wait a bit longer to get their phones bumped up to Android 2.1. At an event focusing on Google Maps Navigation (which hit UK Androids today), HTC slipped in the announcement that the upgrade process for all European HTC Hero variants will begin in June…”

Is this you? Are you tired of being let down one ‘rumor’ after another about an upcoming update that never happens when it says it will? You are not alone.

As much as I love this phone and have had little to no issues with it; I need to have confidence that the company will keep their products up to date once they have been purchased.

So now, this leaves me with a conundrum… Should I try Motorola for my Android fix? Or should I try something else completely different? Like say, WebOS and the Palm Pre+/Pixi+? I’m leaning towards the latter.

Who knows? Maybe by the time I figure all this out, Symbian 3^ will be up to par and prove itself to be the ‘go to’ Mobile OS Platform of choice?

We always here about how the Nexus One didn’t sell like hotcakes and how its numbers were so way, way, lower than that of the iPhone when it launched. But Google verified today that the Nexus One handset is selling well and it is turning a profit. The current numbers are at 60,000 phones a day being activated. With these encouraging numbers, it may very well be one of Google’s main bread winners in its financial portfolio.

Congratulations Google and HTC for a phone well done!

Now hardware manufacturers are beginning to see how big Android is becoming and that there is money to be made in this particular OS market!

Sprint OverDrive

A funny thing happened ‘on my way’ home. I stopped by a Best Buy store and noticed that my most recently purchased Sprint ‘MiFi’ was not 4G capable as I was informed perviously! I noticed this when I was in another Best Buy store and saw the Sprint ‘OverDrive’ router.

I was thankful that I did see this and that it triggered memories of what the previous salesperson told me, “I think it has 4G too…”. When I saw this, I knew I did not have that tech in my current device. So needless to say, I exchanged it for this ‘OverDrive’ device and will use it instead.

I will keep you posted on this.

Sprint MiFi

I have decided to go with the Sprint MiFi router and then I will buy a 16GB iPad. Judging by how much space I used on my iPod Touch 64GB and the intent for which I will use my new iPad, I think I have created a very effective combination.

For now, the Sprint MiFi router works excellent down south, but the real test will be how well it performs in my hometown. According to the coverage area and ‘signal strength’ tool that the Best Buy mobile tech used, I should be in good hands.

The reason I am exploring this combo is for efficiency. I also do not want to wait for a 3G version of the iPad when it will be limited to only AT&T 3G networks. Although I will be paying roughly $20 USD more a month for this service as opposed to the AT&T 3G ‘iPad Plan’, I will be able to use up to five (5) other devices with this type of technology. This is more cost effective and a much more practical solution for my needs.

I will inform you of any problems I might come across or even what success I have as I ‘experiment’ with this combination.

iPad Decisions…

Apple iPad

It is a difficult decision. One that will live with you until you save up enough money to get the next latest and greatest.

There are six flavors of the iPad. Three are WiFi enabled only and three more that will be WiFi AND 3G enabled. The three different capacity levels wil be 16, 32 and 64 GB. My current iPod Touch is 64 GB and I still have over half capacity still available and that is my entire music library (including podcasts), movies/videos and all my downloaded apps (mainly games).

Perfect case scenario for me would be the 3G enabled 64 GB model. However, I know that there would be a more ‘efficient’ model I could utilize to meet all my ‘needs’ for my intended iPad use.

What say you all?

OS 4.0

Things are looking up for the iPhone/iPod Touch this summer. Even more so for the iPad this ‘Fall’.

I have been avoiding the iPhone for a very long time. I will probably continue my avoidance of the iPhone and just use the iPod Touch or iPad for my ‘Apple Fix’.

But what the new OS4 is bringing to the table is a very tempting offer and will require extreme self-discipline! Multiple Mail Inbox (Universal Inbox) along with a ‘multi-tasking environment’ were the two biggest things that were keeping me from switching to ‘The Dark Side’…

I am still contemplating on whether to get the iPad WiFi or wait and get the iPad WiFi w/ 3G. I do have the latest iteration of the iPod Touch and most of these things I will certainly apply to the device. Maybe then I will ‘know’ what I want to do as far as whether to switch or not.
